Over the Summer holidays we asked visitors to invent a new weird and wonderful track pack for our marble run wall.  Hundreds of people entered and the Judges (MAD’s 4 Managers) had the challenging task of selecting 3 winners.

It was very tricky to pick only 3 winners; the calibre was so high and we had so many clever creations to ponder over! Many of the designs really made us smile, it’s wonderful to see there are definitely some future engineers and artists out there!

Mike Greenfield

Front of House Manager, The MAD Museum

The design competition ran from Saturday 20th July until Monday 2nd September 2019. We contacted the 3 worthy winners last week and we would now like to announce who they are:

1ST COMPETITION WINNER: Oliver Peake, age 10 from Nuneaton.

Oliver’s creation was so brilliant we are currently in the process of making his design into a real-life track part. This will be engraved with his name on and will be added to our museum’s marble wall for Oliver and everyone else to enjoy. Here’s his winning design –

2ND COMPETITION WINNER: Charlotte Paine – aged 12 from Nottingham.

3RD COMPETITION WINNER: Kate Sharp -aged 36 from Gloucester.

All 3 winners have been given MAD gift vouchers to be spent in our museum’s shop and free museum tickets for their efforts and creative genius!

If you would like to enter one of our design competitions, please keep an eye on our website’s blog page or MAD’s Facebook page for all the latest details.

Saturday 20th July – Monday 2nd September 2019

If you have been to The MAD (Mechanical Art & Design) Museum recently, you will know there is an interactive wall for visitors to build their own marble runs on.

Using inspiration from around the museum, the wall encourages creative thinking and systematic design but it is a lot of fun!

The aim of the game is to use the various track parts to make the marble travel from the top of the wall to the bottom without whizzing off.

This Summer The MAD Museum invites you to invent a new weird and wonderful track part for MAD Marbles.

What do you want on the wall? Loops and hoops, elevators, slopes, staircases, tubes, spiral tracking, chimes and jumps – the possibilities are endless.

Release your inner inventor! This design competition is open to all age groups, draw your craziest creation and post it to The MAD Museum.

The three winners will receive goodie bags full of MAD treats and their winning track part will be made into a real piece to go on the museum’s MAD Marbles wall. Not only that but the winner’s name will also be printed on the new track piece.

Everyone that uses the triumphant track piece will know it’s yours!

The MAD Museum exhibits mind-blowing artwork from some of the world’s most pioneering inventors, join the illustrious list this Summer!

Design Brief

Draw your design on a (landscape or portrait) white A4 piece of paper. If needed, please include how the track part would work with instructions.
If you win, we will need to be able to make it so please make your drawing and any notes really understandable.

Submission Dates

This competition is open from Saturday 20th July. All entries need to be received by 5pm on Monday 2nd September 2019.
The Winner will be announced and contacted via email on Wednesday 11th September 2019.

Participates could enter by picking up a form from the museum or downloading it from our website. We received hundreds and hundreds of designs from a wide range of different nationalities, ages and genders.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone that entered.
There were some truly amazing efforts but we had to pick 3 winners and these are the ones we felt most fit the brief.

WINNER

Hazel Cooper
13 years old from Birmingham

RUNNER-UP

Katie Thomas
13 years old from Shropshire

RUNNER-UP

Cian Shea
10 years old from Northampton

The winners have now all been contacted and their goodie bags are on the way to them.

Over February Half Term (Saturday 13th – Monday 22nd February 2016), we ran an Automata Design Competition. We asked our visitors to get inspired at the museum, then design their very own piece of automata.
Hundreds of people entered and it was fantastic to see the wide variety of designs. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who entered. Our judges found it very difficult to pick a winner, but it had to be done.

The Winner of MAD’S Automata Design Competition : Alex Williams, from Leeds.

“Myself and the other judges particularly liked the whimsical, humours aspects of this design. From a construction perspective, the fact that this design involves several different mechanisms which could be portrayed by different materials and colours, made it really stand out. “

February Half Term at The MAD Museum

Saturday 13th – Monday 22nd February 2016

The Brief

Using inspiration from around The MAD Museum, we want you to design your very own piece of automata.
For those who aren’t sure, automata is a (typically wooden) sculpture which moves in a clever or funny way. Here are some examples:

As long as it has an element of movement, you can design whatever you like. Whether it be a quirky character, animated creature, interesting scene or geometric pattern- the possibilities are endless.

What You Win

Picked by one of our resident automata artists and MAD’s Technical Manager, the winning design will be brought to life and made into a fully-functioning sculpture by our technicians.

It will then be exhibited at the museum for everyone to see and interact with. Not only that but the winner will also get a goodie bag full of MAD treats.

BeFunky-Collage2

After being exhibited at The MAD Museum, the winning piece will be returned to its designer to be taken home.

From Saturday 18th July until Monday 7th September 2015, The MAD Museum held a Summer Design Competition. We asked interested applicants to examine and interact with the museum’s  MAD Marbles wall, then design a new track part.
Over this 7-week competition hundreds of people entered in their inspirational creations. The judges found it incredibly difficult to pick just one winner. So hard in fact that they chose 3 winners.

The Winners of MAD’s 2015 Summer Design Competition are:

Chris Hansford, aged 45yrs from Doncaster
Felix Burman, aged 10yrs from Temple Grafton
Max Hansford, aged 12yrs from Doncaster

The judges were incredibly impressed by the creativity and imagination of the winner’s designs. Each of the 3 entries (as you’ll see below) show imaginative ingenuity and demonstrate a practical understanding of design.
All 3 winning pieces will be made, then featured on the museum’s MAD Marbles wall for all our visitors to enjoy. The winning pieces will be engraved with each designer’s name so that everyone will know it’s theirs. Not only that but Chris, Max and Felix all won goodie bags full of MAD prizes.

Winner: Chris Hansford – ‘Trampoline- track part

Winner: Max Hansford: ‘Fallen Floors’ track part

There were only three winners but we want to show our appreciation for the judge’s other favourites. All of the following participants created amazing track pieces, all of which stood out from the crowd and amazed our judges in different ways.

Harry Corden, aged 18yrs
Clare Childs, aged 35yrs from Belfast
Joseph Dineen, aged 9yrs from Ashurst

From the team at MAD we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who entered!

From Saturday 28th March until Monday 13th April 2015, The MAD Museum ran a pop-up card competition.

The brief was simple, think outside the box to create a crazy gift card, the winning card maker would receive ultimate glory! (oh and a goodie bag full of MAD treats) There were 2 rules:

  • Make it 3D and pop out
  • Include an element of MADness

We were completely amazed by the sheer number and amazingly creative talents of the people who entered.
No card was alike, everyone had put their own spin on the brief and the Team at MAD took a lot of pleasure in seeing (and playing with) the latest 3D entries.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that entered!

*enter loud clapping and whooping sounds here

As with these things, there always has to be one champion and the winner of The MAD Museum’s Easter 2015 design competition is………

drum roll please….

Matthew Carlisle, aged 11 from Bicester.

Well done Matthew!

All of the judges were very impressed by Matthew’s originality, artistic skills and  inventiveness.  He must have spent hours creating this 6-sided pop-up masterpiece and I think you will agree this card is pretty special..
